Today I found 28 cents . . . 1 nickel, 2 dimes, and 3 pennies. I also found a smushed elongated penny, which sadly will not count toward the daily totals.

I spent the day in Melbourne, FL today, home of the Washington Nationals Spring Training Camp. I got John Wetland (former World Series MVP) and Ryan Zimmerman (who should be a good player for the Nationals) to sign single balls for me. I also got around 20 Nationals to sign a team ball for me, including Hall of Fame Manager Frank Robinson.

The 28 cents that I found for the day was on the drive from Kissimmee to Melbourne and in the Melbourne area.

Totals for the day: 28 cents

Today I found 96 cents . . . 2 nickels, 6 dimes, and 26 pennies.

The weather was better today and I decided to give Astros camp another shot. In addition to working on my Astros team ball I got single signed baseballs by Jason Hersch (Astros prospect), Mickey Carrol (the last living Munchkin from the Wizard of Oz—he happened to be there to watch practice), Nolan Ryan, and Koby Clemens (son of Roger Clemens).

The 96 cents that I found during the day was in and around the Kissimmee area.

Today I found 19 cents . . . 1 dime & 9 pennies.

I arrived in Florida at 9am this morning, roughly 20 hours after I left Texas. Rain the entire way and a stop in New Orleans to visit friends delayed the trip just a bit. Of course just as I pull into Kissimmee, FL and the Astros camp the security guard announces that practice is canceled for the day due to weather. Blah. Not a good way to start my vacation. I did wait near the parking lot and got a few autographs, but nothing special. I just had enough energy to find 19 cents (one dime & nine pennies) at a nearby car wash before I went to sleep the rest of the day away.

Saturday, February 25, 2006

Today I found 50 cents . . . 1 nickel, 1 dime, and 1 quarter. Change finds were recorded in four states; Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.

I departed for Spring Training in Florida early this afternoon. On my way out of Texas I found six cents (all pennies) at the Kwick Kar Wash. In Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans, I found 26 cents (one quarter & one penny) at a gas station. In Mississippi I found 13 cents (one dime & three pennies) at a store where I stopped to get some food. In Alabama I found five cents (all pennies) when I stopped at another gas station to use the restroom. .

Today I found $1.27 . . . 1 nickel, 3 dimes, 2 quarters, and 42 pennies (the wondrous change cycle).

Recordkeeping was not my strength today, but I do recall that I found my first nine cents (one nickel & four pennies) at JR’s Car Wash, the car wash next to my apartment complex. In the evening Bailey and I met up for dinner and we did some change searching. We checked a Sonic parking lot and several drive-thrus in the area and we both found change. On the way home I stopped at another Sonic and Ale Gator’s Car Wash. That last stop is where I got the majority of the my change for the day since I know for a fact that I found both quarters, all three dimes, and a lot of pennies there. Right when I exited my car there was a pile of 15 cents (all pennies) sitting on the ground.

Tomorrow morning I’m leaving for Spring Training in Florida. This year I have chose to drive down vs. flying and renting a car. As such, I have no firm return date (work is flexible so that isn’t an issue) but I’m thinking my blank baseball supply will last no more than two weeks. Of course I might get tired of doing nothing but watching baseball, sitting in 80-degree weather, and being on vacation, so I could come back earlier. I’m hoping to find an Internet connection a few times while I’m down in Florida, but posting will be sporadic for the next few weeks.

Today I found 20 cents . . . 1 dime & 10 pennies.

After lunch this afternoon I walked over to Kroger, a local grocery store, and found a penny under a coin counting machine. On the way home I stopped at a no name car wash and found 18 cents (one dime & eight pennies). The final find of the day was another single penny. This penny was located in the parking lot of Paul’s Pizza, the not so cheap pizza place where I joined my friend Robert for dinner.

Today I found 31 cents . . . 1 dime & 21 pennies.

On my way to lunch this afternoon I stopped at the Kwick Kar Wash and found 31 cents (one dime & 21 pennies). All the pennies were on the ground and the dime was in the change return slot of a car wash station.

Continuing with Part II of our two day look into the contents of the “Not Change Cup” I bring you the four final pictures.

First, there are miscelanious items that have been found (from the picture you can see that this is everything from a giant nut, to keys, to religious pendants, to women’s jewelry):

There are also various plastic items (toy beaver, army man, etc) that I have found. Specifically, there are six plastic items that have made it to the “Not Change Cup”:

The penultimate category of the “Not Change Cup” is Rocks & Rocks that look like fish. To get picked up the rock must be polished, or be unique. To be specific, I believe that the rock that looks like a fish is actually a piece of glass made to look like a fish, but it still is put into this category:

Finally, we have various foreign coins that I have found. There are a total of 62 coins, representing 16 countries (actually 15 countries and the European Union):

And thus ends our two-day series on the “Not Change Cup.” Given the size of the cup and the current contents I'm quite certain that I will have to find a second cup, or find something to store new “Not Change” finds in the near future.

Today I found 35 cents . . . 1 nickel, 2 dimes, and 10 pennies.

This afternoon at the post office I found a penny on the ground as I walked out and a dime in the change return slot of a USA Today newspaper box. At a nearby car wash I found nine cents (one nickel & four pennies) and at Sonic I found 15 cents (one dime & five pennies).

As promised I have taken some pictures of the “Not Change Cup,” as well as the contents within. So, without further delay I present my “Not Change Cup” (which was actually a find itself):

I have broken down the contents of the cup by category. First, there are smushed elongated pennies (six total):

Fake change (which if it was real would total $1.88--$1 bill, five nickels, one dime, two quarters, and three pennies):

Tokens (28 of them; ranging from everything from transportation, to entertainment, to bathroom use):

And rubber bouncy balls and marbles:

Tomorrow we will close our two-day series on the “Not Change Cup” with four final pictures: Miscellaneous Items, Plastic Things, Rocks & Rocks That Look Like a Fish, and Foreign Coins.

Monday, February 20, 2006

Today I found 17 cents . . . 1 dime and 7 pennies. I also found a plastic nickel and a first class stamp. Sadly, neither the plastic nickel nor the first class stamp will count toward the daily totals.

On my way to the post office this evening I stopped at Ale Gator’s Car Wash and found 15 cents (one dime & five pennies). At the post office I found two cents, both on the ground by the stamp machine. It was at the post office that I found the plastic nickel (in the parking lot) and the first class stamp (on the floor by some PO boxes). Although the later two finds will not count toward the daily totals they will be deposited into my “Not Change Cup,” keeper of things not change.

Speaking of the “Not Change Cup” I will be posting pictures of its contents in the near future (quite possibly tomorrow). I posed the question if this was of interest and the response was overwhelming. Three entire people (Brian, Liza, & Bailey) thought it was a good idea, so tune in tomorrow.

Sunday, February 19, 2006

Today I found 31 cents . . . 1 nickel, 1 dime, and 16 pennies.

This afternoon I looked out at the thermometer on my back porch and the temperature was 34 degrees. It was 1:30pm. This is unacceptable. However, I’m tough so I decided to brave the near freezing temperatures and venture to Ci-Ci’s, a pizza restaurant, to meet up with Tara for lunch. While waiting for Tara I went over to Kroger, a local grocery store, and found two pennies on the ground by a change counting machine. At Ci-Ci’s I found one penny sitting atop a video game it their arcade room.

After lunch I went over to a nearby car wash and found five cents (all pennies). On the way home I checked yet another no-name car wash and found nine cents (one nickel & four pennies). My final stop on the way home was my JR’s Car Wash, the car wash formerly known as the car wash next to my apartment complex. There I found 13 cents (one dime & three pennies) scattered about by vacuum cleaner stations. In the evening, after a long night of packing eBay items, I walked to a nearby gas station to get a drink and I found a penny in the parking lot.

Yesterday Bailey logged a request that I publish a picture of the contents of the “Not Change Cup,” keeper of the oddities that I find during my hunt for change. I would be interested to know if anyone else actually cares about such a picture. Comments?

Saturday, February 18, 2006

Today I found 89 cents . . . 4 nickels, 3 dimes, 1 quarter, and 14 pennies (the unwonted change cycle). I also found a plastic army man, which sadly will not count toward the daily totals.

It was another bleak day in Houston so I didn’t want to venture outside much (bleak being defined as in the 40’s, which is unheard of for this time of year). However, I did meet up with Bailey this afternoon to pick up some items for eBay. Along the way I stopped by the post office to mail a package and I found 52 cents (three nickels, one dime, one quarter, and two pennies) underneath a very dusty stamp machine.

On the way home I paused for a quick lunch at Sonic. However, I parked in a nearby car wash and walked over. Searching the car wash I found 12 cents (one dime & two pennies) and in a pharmacy parking lot that I passed through I found an additional four pennies. At Sonic itself I was rewarded with three cents.

My final stop of the day came at my JR’s Car Wash, the new name of the car wash next to my apartment complex. There I found 18 cents (one nickel, one dime, and three pennies). This is also where I found the plastic army man. Although the plastic army man will not count toward the daily totals he will be deposited into my “Not Change Cup,” keeper of oddities found during the search for change.

Today I found $1.12 . . . 1 nickel, 7 dimes, 1 quarter, and 12 pennies (the inspirational change cycle).

Early this morning I checked the drive thrus at KFC and Starbucks. I found 11 cents (one dime & one penny) and 16 cents (one nickel, one dime, one penny), respectively. Later in the day I stopped by a Sonic and found 44 cents (four dimes & four pennies). Most of the change was scattered about the parking lot.

At lunch this afternoon I actually ate at a Sonic and I found another five cents (all pennies). Two were on the patio and three were in parking spaces in the parking lot. Driving home I stopped at Kroger, a local grocery store, where I found 11 cents (one dime & one penny) in the coin return slot of a coin counting machine. The dime and penny were stuck together but a gentle pull was all that was needed to separate them. My final find of the day was 25 cents (one quarter). It was found in a car wash station at the car wash adjacent to my apartment complex.

For over five years the car wash next to my apartment complex has had no name. The no name car wash is a thing of the past. As I stopped in this afternoon I saw a new sign that proclaimed that the name of the car wash is JR’s Car Wash. Readers of other change finding blogs might recognize this name. It is the same name of the car wash near Bailey’s apartment complex. To simplify things I will continue to refer to this car wash simply as the car wash next to my apartment complex.

Today I found $1.38 . . . 1 dime, 4 quarters, and 3 pennies.

On my way home from work this afternoon I spotted a very run over penny in the road at a stoplight. I opened my door and without even taking off my seatbelt I was able to retrieve it. In the evening I was getting gas at Shell and while my car was filling up I took a quick walk around the parking lot and found 11 cents (one dime & one penny). Both were in close proximity to the box where customers can make purchases at night.

At the post office this evening I was treated to unusually short lines and a penny by the front door as I exited. My final stop on the way home was Ale Gator’s Car Wash, where I found $1.25 (5 quarters). Three of the quarters were on the ledge of a car wash booth, one was in the coin return slot of an adjacent car wash booth, and one was in the coin return slot of a dollar bill changer.

Today I found 58 cents . . . 1 nickel, 2 dimes, and 33 pennies. I also found a Mexican one peso coin, which sadly does not count toward the daily totals.

At the post office this afternoon I found six cents (one nickel & one penny) as I mailed some packages. The nickel was in the coin return slot of a stamp machine and the penny was on the floor directly below the stamp machine.

On the way home I popped into Kroger, a local grocery store, to check the coin return slot of a change counting machine and I found 21 cents (one dime & 11 pennies). Closer to home I checked two car washes. At the first I found 12 cents (one dime & two pennies) and at the second I found 19 cents (all pennies). 16 of the 19 pennies were sitting in a pile on top of a vacuum cleaner.

It was at Kroger where I found the one peso coin (valued at 9.48 cents as of today). Sadly, the peso does not count toward the daily totals. It was on the floor, right next to the coin counting machine. Nevertheless, the one peso coin will be deposited into my “Not Change Cup,” keeper of all non-US coinage as well as various other things found during the race.

Today I found 78 cents . . . 2 dimes, 2 quarters, and 8 pennies.

On my way to work this morning I stopped by the Kwick Kar Wash and found six cents (all pennies). At lunch I ate at Rocky’s Subs, which serves quite possibly the best Philly Cheesesteak outside of Philadelphia. Leaving the restaurant I spotted my second 2006 penny of the year. It was under the front edge of a nearby soda machine.

On the way home from a post office trip I stopped at HEB, a local grocery store, to pick up some provisions. I found 72 cents (two dimes, two quarters, & two pennies). The two dimes and a penny were on the ground outside the store by a bank of soda machines. The two quarters were in the coin return slot of a lottery machine, and the final penny was by a cash register where I checked out.

Besides the change I was quite proud of my HEB purchases. They had a ton of coupons which I took advantage of. By buying a cooked chicken ($6) and some chicken fajita meat ($7) I was able to get the following items for free: flour tortillas, tortilla chips, bag o salad, refried beans, sour cream, Lipton pasta mix, bag o cheese, Kool-Aid mix, and a two liter bottle of black cherry vanilla coke.

Monday, February 13, 2006

Today I found 74 cents . . . 1 nickel, 1 dime, 2 quarters, and 9 pennies (the terrific change cycle).

Two different car washes that I visited this evening both had 26 cents for me (both times a penny and a quarter). I also stopped by Sonic for dinner this evening and found 22 cents (one nickel, one dime, & seven pennies) while waiting for my food.

As I waited for my edibles I decided to play a new game, which I called “Long Distance Change Find.” I stood on the patio and scanned the parking lot looking for what I believed to be change. I am happy to report that every object I identified as change was in fact dropped coinage. Sadly, one penny that I located at about 50 feet (at least I think it was a penny) had a car parked on top of it when I went to pick it up. I briefly thought about trying to outwait the car, but The Simpsons was coming on in 10 minutes and I wanted to get home.

Sunday, February 12, 2006--One Year Anniv.

Today I found 10 cents . . . 1 nickel & 5 pennies.

Heading home from Minute Maid Ballpark and the conclusion of the 2006 Astros Fan Fest I stopped at the Kwick Kar Wash and found one penny and Sonic where I found four pennies. Later in the evening I found a nickel in the laundry room of my apartment complex.

I seem to be heading for my worst month ever, which is sad since today is the ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the Change Race. Notwithstanding the lackluster month the past year has been excellent. If my rough math is correct I have found the following amount of coinage:

Pennies: 5,750
Nickels: 303
Dimes: 687
Quarters: 347
Total Weight: 44 pounds

Dollar bills and some odd change (i.e. dollar coins, bills, etc) made up the rest of the finds. I leave you tonight with a picture of all change found to date (second coin holder courtesy of Bailey, who gave me his several days ago when he cashed in his change for a $100 bill):

Today I found 5 cents . . . all pennies.

Today was spent at Minute Maid Ballpark, where the Houston Astros hosted their annual FanFest. I picked up quite a few items that will be making their way to e-bay in the near future. I also obtained autographs of Astros manager Phil Garner, Astros Two Bagger Craig Biggio, and former Astro Jimmy Wynn. On the way home I stopped at the Kwick Kar Wash and found three cents and the Sonic next door where I found two cents. One of my Sonic pennies was my first 2006 model of the year. However, the honor of finding the first 06 model goes to Brian, who beat me by a day.

I thought about going out this evening for a brief change run, but I was up early for baseball and I just didn't have it in me. Besides, tomorrow is another early day at the ballpark so I though it wise to turn in early and sit on my unusually small totals.

This afternoon Bailey and I had lunch after the ballpark adventures. At a nearby table a pill popping, chain smoking woman ignored her out of control children. When one of her kids started banging on a sign near the front door I politely told the kid to knock it off. The woman was not amused that I was scolding her child and when I apologized but told her that she should do it herself she responded, “Look, I don’t have the time to pay attention to what my kids are doing all the time.” Spoken like a true Mother of the Year!

Today I found 96 cents . . . 2 nickels, 2 dimes, 1 quarter, and 41 pennies (the startling change cycle).

At Boston Market this afternoon I retrieved 35 cents (one quarter & 10 pennies) from the base of a window at the drive-thru. In the same location, this time at Starbucks, I unearthed 12 cents (one nickel & seven pennies). On the way to a doctor’s appointment I stopped by Ale Gator’s Car Wash and found 31 cents (one nickel, one dime, & 16 pennies). Closer to the doctor’s office I found another car wash and this time detected 14 cents (one dime & four pennies). To close out the day I had two-cent finds at the doctor’s office parking lot and at a convenience store.

I again decided to break down my pennies by year, to see if any interesting trends developed. From the 2000’s there were 21 pennies, 1990’s six pennies, 1980’s nine pennies, and 1960’s five pennies. My longest streak of unbroken years was six, from 1980-1985. There was a two-way tie for second place with three unbroken years, from 1996-1998 and from 2000-2002. The oldest penny was minted in 1964 while the newest penny (actually nine of them) were minted in 2005.

At the Kwick Kar Wash I found four cents and at the Sonic next to the Kwick Kar Wash I found six cents. Two of the pennies I spotted as I was driving away. I parked the car and retrieved them, thanks to the shimmer of the pennies from the late afternoon sun.

After a bit of research I found out that the beaver holding a coffee cup that I found yesterday is Mr. Beaver from the movie/book The Chronicles of Narnia. It was a toy placed in kids meals by McDonalds. It was the forth toy in a set of eight that McDonalds gave away to promote the movie and sell their product.

Today I found 59 cents . . . 2 quarters & 9 pennies. I also found a plastic dinosaur and a plastic beaver that was holding a cup of coffee. Sadly, the plastic does not count toward the daily totals.

Lots of finds in lots of places defined today. I found a penny by a vending machine near my apartment complex office this afternoon. I also found single pennies by a stamp machine at the post office, in the parking lot of Poppies (where I had a late lunch), outside a pawnshop where I went to purchase a metal file and some tin snips (file at Sears = $5.99, two files and tin snips at the pawnshop = $2), and outside of Food Town (a local grocery store where I picked up some provisions for the week).

Later in the evening I found three cents at the car wash next to the post office and 51 cents (two quarters & one penny) at the car wash next to my apartment.

The car wash next to my apartment is also where I found the plastic dinosaur and the plastic beaver holding a cup of coffee. Although the plastic items do not count toward the daily totals they will most certainly be deposited into my “Not Change Cup,” keeper of all unique items that are found which are not change. I leave you tonight with a picture of said dinosaur and beaver, as well as the change that was found for the day:

Today I found 58 cents . . . 2 dimes & 38 pennies.

Prior to going to my friend John’s house for a Super Bowl party I had some chores to complete. I also hit a few of my favorite change spots and recorded some finds. A trifecta of car washes gave me the majority of my change for the day. At the Kwick Kar Wash I found 23 cents (all pennies), the car wash next to my apartment had 13 cents (one dime & three pennies), and a no name car wash gave me six cents (all pennies). At Champions Forrest and FM 1960 I was stopped at a red light and saw a penny. Getting out of my car to retrieve it I discovered that there was a total of 15 cents (one dime & five pennies) by the curb.

For the sake of fun I decided to arrange my pennies by year to see if there was any type of trend. I discovered that of the 38 pennies one was from the 1960’s, one was from the 1970’s, nine were from the 1980’s, 11 were from the 1990’s, and 16 were from the 2000’s. The oldest penny was minted in 1961 and the newest penny was from 2005. Perhaps a research grant is in my future. Anyone know of a government agency that wants to pay me for finding change? Probably not.

Baseball season has officially kicked off, at least in the collegiate ranks! I saw my first baseball game of 2006, a thumping of Central Missouri State at the hands of the Rice Owls (National Champions a few years ago). On my way back from the baseball game I found a penny at Sonic and a nickel at the Kwick Kar Wash, which was quite busy due to the near 80 degree temperature.

In the evening I had to take a trip to the post office and Wal-Mart. At Wal-Mart I found a penny by the checkout line and a nickel in the change return slot of a claw machine.

Today I found 91 cents . . . 1 dime, 2 quarters, and 31 pennies.

I didn’t have to work today, and I occupied myself doing a lot of nothing. Driving down FM 1960 this afternoon I stopped at a no name car wash and found eight cents (all pennies). Shortly down the road I stopped at What-A-Burger, a local fast food restaurant, for lunch and found a penny at the base of the counter. Another penny was found in the parking lot on the way out.

Driving back home I stopped at Blue Water Car Wash and hit the mother load, 80 cents (one dime, two quarters, and 20 pennies). The two quarters were in a car wash bay, and the vast majority of the rest of the change was sitting in a pile by a vacuum cleaner. In the evening I found one penny in the frozen food section of Sam’s Club, where I shopped with a free one-day membership pass.

There is still some work left to do, but not bad for one evening.

The biggest news of the day, of course, is Bailey hitting the $100 mark in found change! It was a good race, and I’m happy that he will continue to search for change even after hitting the $100 mark. After all, he still has a way to go to catch Brian, and myself.

Tons of rain hit the Houston metropolitan area today, so there was little activity at any of the are car washes. That didn’t stop me from looking, but no change was found. However, on my way back from the bank this afternoon I swung into Kroger, a local grocery store, to look for some hanging file folders. No folders were found but I did pick up 12 cents (one dime & two pennies). The first penny was in the reject slot of a coin counting machine, the dime was on the ground by a closed checkout lane, and the final penny was on the ground by a self-checkout lane.
